Fazilka connection to Yakub hanging
Fazilka town had a link in the hanging of Yakub Memon in Nagpur on Thursday morning as Meera Chadha Borwankar, a 1981 Maharashtra cadre IPS officer, currently posted as the additional director general of police (jails), Mumbai, who is originally from Fazilka, was heading the team that supervised arrangements and ordered the hanging.

Memon was convicted for his involvement in the 1993 Bombay blasts. Earlier, Borwankar was also a member of the team that supervised the hanging of Mumbai Taj hotel terror attack convict Asmal Kasab.
She is the first woman to be posted as commissioner of Mumbai crime branch in its 150-year-long history. Born and brought up in Fazilka, she did her matriculation from the local DC Model School. Her father OP Chadha was with the Border Security Force posted in Fazilka region till the 1971 war. She completed her graduation from Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, and did her masters in English literature from DAV College, Jalandhar.
She was awarded the President's Medal for meritorious service in 1997, apart from the police medal and the director general's insignia for meritorious service and the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship (2001-02).
During her stint with the Mumbai CID from 1993-95, one of the important cases she investigated was the Jalgaon sex scandal.
Her husband Abhay Borwankar quit the IAS to start a food-processing business. "The entire Fazilka is proud of her achievements. It is wonderful to have such police officers. She is a source of inspiration to thousands of girls," said Nadveep Asija, a social activist.
