“All neighbouring states have fixed the terms of vehicles and now we have also fixed lifespan of commercial vehicles at 15 years,” said Rajiv Tiwari, assistant secretary, State Transport Authority (STA), Chandigarh. “It has been done to check the rising pollution level in the city.” The pollution data was not immediately made available.

The STA has also banned re-registration of transport vehicles from other states after five years of their first registration.

Asked how the bans will be imposed, Tiwari said, “The traffic police will be challaning all commercials registered before 2001.” On vehicles coming from outside, he said other states have already banned commercial vehicles which are 15 years old.

Across categories, commercial and others, the UT has 12.7 lakh vehicles now, while the population is around 12 lakh. In 2010, there were 7.5 lakh vehicles. Figures say over 4,000 new vehicles are registered every month here.
