A 19-year-old tourist was killed after he slipped into a 200-foot gorge while trekking towards Triund, a famous trekkers' destination overlooking Dharamsala town, on Sunday.

The victim has been identified as Manav Patel, hailing from DR Park, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He was part of a group of 32 college students who were on an educational tour to the hill town.

Police said Patel fell off a cliff while clicking photographs at Barad Nullah, around four kilometres from Galu temple, the starting point of the trek.

After finding no way to descend into the gorge to rescue Patel, the other students sounded the McLeodganj police.
A search and rescue team comprising police personnel and local trekkers found Patel and rushed him to a local hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

"Police have informed the victim's parents. A case has been registered and investigation is on," said additional superintendent of police (ASP) Pankaj Sharma.

The picturesque trek has claimed many lives in the past. In 2013, Ravi Nibhanpudi, an assistant producer with NDTV Channel, died on the trek. His body could be found only after four months. Same year, two French tourists went missing in the hills never to be found. At least three tourists have been injured on the trek in the past two months.
