RTI activist advocate Dinesh Chadha on Tuesday claimed that he was facing a threat to his life for raising voice against the collection of 'Gunda Tax' on sand and gravel in Nurpur Bedi block of Rupnagar district.
RTI activist advocate Dinesh Chadha on Tuesday claimed that he was facing a threat to his life for raising voice against the collection of 'Gunda Tax' on sand and gravel in Nurpur Bedi block of Rupnagar district.
Chadha has written letters to the union home secretary and Punjab state election commission in this regard.
Chadha said he, along with other persons, filed a written complaint at Nurpur Bedi police station on March 4 regarding the collection of lakhs of rupees in the form of 'Gunda Tax' on sand and gravel in Nurpur Bedi block by some persons.
On the complaint, the then Nurpur Bedi SHO conducted raids against those involved in collecting the Gunda Tax, who said they were working for three leaders of the ruling party of the state. The SHO was transferred the same day, he said.
The RTI activist said he later met the SSP and other senior police officials to seek necessary action on his complaint.
He claimed that the locals also resorted to a road blockade to press the demand for action against those involved, but no FIR had been lodged so far.
Chadha claimed that there was threat to his life as no action had been taken against these persons, who were issuing threats to him.
He said in case of any physical or other harm caused to him, the police of Rupnagar district and those involved in collection of Gunda Tax and the political leaders supporting them would be held responsible.
He urged the union home secretary and the state election commission to intervene and ensure action against those involved.
