With an eye on the 2017 assembly polls, Lok Sabha member from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal told the officials to complete the developmental works, of which she laid the foundation stone here on Tuesday, within one year.

With an eye on the 2017 assembly polls, Lok Sabha member from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal told the officials to complete the developmental works, of which she laid the foundation stone here on Tuesday, within one year.

Talking to officials while laying the foundation stone of a waterworks project in Gehri Bhaggi village near here, the union minister for food processing industries was heard asking water supply and sanitation executive engineer JS Chahal about the time in which the project would be completed. When one of the officials said that the project could not be completed within a year, Harsimrat looked disappointed and asked them that when the panchayat representatives in the nearby village of Talwandi Sabo promised to complete the work in six months, how they could claim that their project needed more than one year.

This prompted Bathinda Development Authority chairman Moneesh Kumar to intervene. He said that the earlier panchayat was making exaggerated claims and even they could not complete the work within six months.

On this, the union minister told the executive engineer, in a lighter vein, that if he managed to complete the waterworks project within a year, his name would be recommended for promotion.

The union minister, however, laid emphasis on quality of work and ensuring that it serves the needs of people. Harsimrat told the village residents to keep an eye and inform the officials if they found the work to be substandard.

Meanwhile, on a spree of laying foundation stones and inaugurating projects, the union minister also laid the foundation stone of waterworks at Manwala village in Lambi assembly segment of Muktsar district and Gehlewala, Gehri Bhagi, Gehri Buttar and Jodhpur Romana villages in Bathinda district.

Besides inaugurating a new building of a government senior secondary school, constructed at a cost of `30 lakh at Bangi Kalan village, Harsimrat inaugurated a park in the village. She also laid the foundation stone of the Kaile Bandar road and inaugurated a fish market at Jodhpur Romana village. At Bathinda, the MP inaugurated a new cyber cell of the police besides a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre.

However, the union minister could not cover all the events within five hours, as was announced earlier, and the inaugurations went on till late in the evening.
