Throwing their weight behind the guest teachers, dozens of villages in the district locked down the government schools in their areas on Saturday to protest against the termination orders issued to the teachers.
The protesters, which included students, parents and some social activists, were demanding the immediate reinstatement of the teachers.
“We have only 11 teachers in our school. Out of which seven are guest teachers. If they will take them off what are we going to do?” asked Shivani, a student Narnund Girls High School.
On Friday, Haryana’s education department served a 24-hour show-cause notice to over 4,000 guest teachers as per the order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Similar scenes were witnessed in Kishangarh village in Adampur, where the protesters locked down the Government Boys High School.
Around 150 villagers and students demanded the continuation of a guest teacher, who used to teach mathematics there.
“We had only one guest teacher. Ever since his arrival the school was showing marked improvement in the result. With such moves government is not only playing with the future of these teachers but is also making mockery of our children’s future,” said social activist Kuldeep Yadav.
Rajli village also saw similar protests. “The Girls High School here is already struggling due to teacher shortage. And if with government takes the guest teachers off it will leave us barehanded,” said Rampal, sarpanch of the village.
Villagers also locked down the Government Girls Senior Secondary (GGSSS) School in Madenhaeri village. Lock downs were also witnessed in Mirchpur, Gudia Kera, Gorawali, Nandodi, Chobara, and Dandi Sanchila villages. Meanwhile, there were reports that guest teachers marched to the regional research centre office at Vivekanand Bhawan in Sirsa and pasted a memorandum of their demands on the office’s gate.
