Haryana is second worst in the country in sex ratio at birth in the data compiled by the Civil Registration System (CRS) for 2013. The CRS, which comes under the Registrar General of India, comprises all officially registered birth and death data and has recently come out with its annual report.

The CRS, popularly known as birth and death registration system, is the recording of vital events such as live births, stillbirths and deaths under the statutory provisions on continuous and permanent basis. For sex ratio, only live births are taken into consideration.
The sex ratio has been defined as the number of female births per thousand male births. As per the CRS data, the lowest sex ratio has been reported from Manipur (700) followed by Haryana (840) in the country. However, Haryana has improved from its 2012 figure of 832 female births per thousand male births.
In 2013, Mahendragarh district (744) was the worst in Haryana followed by Jhajjar (766), Rewari (788), Kaithal (793) and Sonepat (801). Mewat (914) recorded the best figure in the state.
PUNJAB SHOWS IMPROVEMENT
Punjab has sex ratio of 876, which has improved from 844 in 2012. In 2013, Amritsar (830) was the worst district in Punjab in terms of sex ratio followed by Ferozepur (844), Sangrur (855), Pathankot (858), Gurdaspur (863) and Patiala (863). Nawanshahr (936) recorded the best figures in the state. Chandigarh recorded sex ratio of 904 which improved from 887 in 2012.
SEX RATIO DIPS IN HIMACHAL PRADESH
Himachal Pradesh with sex ratio of 906 has shown a dip from 2012 when it was 916. Bilaspur, Kangra and Una districts, which share border with Punjab, recorded low sex ratio.
In 2013, Bilaspur (863) was the worst in Himachal followed by Hamirpur (875), Kangra (877), Mandi (886) and Una (883). Lahaul and Spiti (1,271) recorded the best figure in the state.
J&K SHOWS THE WAY
Although Jammu and Kashmir recorded a sex ratio of 923, there was a wide variation in figures collected from the districts. Kathua (578) was the worst in the state followed by Reasi (699), Udhampur (777), Samba (792) and Kulgam (809). Jammu (1,075) recorded the best figure in the state. There are four more districts which recorded a sex ratio of over 1,000. These include Srinagar (1,063), Leh (1,023), Rajouri (1,010) and Kishtwar (1,001).
