Held gangster Dilpreet had been using car robbed from Ludhiana for a year

The gangster was injured in an encounter on July 9 and is admitted to the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Arrested gangster Dilpreet Singh Baba, 26, had been using a stolen car, a white Swift, for the past 17 months on a fake registration number plate, police have found. “The vehicle was snatched at gunpoint in February 2017 from Raikot in Ludhiana,” said Varinder Pal Singh AIG (intelligence).

When arrested in the vicinity of the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 43, Chandigarh, on July 9 (Monday), he was driving the same car. A joint team of the state special operation cell of Punjab intelligence and the Jalandhar police had carried out the arrest in coordination with the Chandigarh Police.

The gangster was injured in the encounter and is admitted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Institution and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. Police sources said the vehicle had been snatched a day after its purchase.

In his complaint, the owner, Jatinder Singh, had told the police that he was robbed of the car at gunpoint by four young men. Then, he had recently returned from Italy and was returning after paying obeisance at a gurdwara.

About the gangster

Dilpreet hails from Dhahan village near Nurpur Bedi in Rupnagar and his name figures on the list of 17 dreaded gangsters that the state police have prepared. In police record, he is named as an accused in 30 cases, including murder, extortion, dacoity, robbery and escape from police custody.

He had escaped while he was being taken to jail from a Rupnagar court in May 2016, and had not been rearrested since. Sources said over the past 16 months, he frequented the Sector-34 gurdwara, where he often met his mother and sister.
