Two other women who were administered the injection and also developed complications have been admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here.

Sujata (22), Amrita (23) and Leena (23) were administered the injection on Saturday after which they complained of severe pain in stomach. While Sujata died at the CMCH on Monday, the other two are battling for life.

Health authorities maintained that the medicine was also administered to several other women at MCH. Sources said it was likely that some other medicine might have reacted.

Medicine samples sent for tests

Meanwhile, the health department has sent samples of the 12 medicines, including the IV fluid, that were administered to these women to a Chandigarh laboratory for tests.

Family welfare director Dr HS Bali, who rushed to Ludhiana, said the three were given the same injection, but did not confirm that it led to the death. Dr Bali said, “A large number of women were given the injection and most deliveries undertaken at the hospital were successful. It is unfortunate that the three developed complications.”

Sujata’s family alleged that she was administered the wrong injection leading to her death. Her nephew, Ashok Kumar, said the authorities should compensate the family.

Meanwhile, Dr Bali held a meeting with civil surgeon Dr Renu Chhatwal and senior medical officer Dr PS Sidhu to discuss the events. Dr Chhatwal said, “An inquiry is going on after which the cause of the death and complications in the two women would be revealed.”

MCH is not new to controversy. Five newborns had died under mysterious circumstances there last year.
