Breaking their silence in the case of immolation of 16-year-old girl of Dhandari Kalan here, the police on Saturday said the victim was allegedly in touch with a person over mobile phone from October 25 to 27, the period when she was allegedly abducted by four accused of the same locality and was confined at an unidentified place.

Refusing to disclose the identity of that person, police commissioner Pramod Ban said the person could be a witness in the case.

The police commissioner said several vital facts had surfaced and the police had formed a special investigation team (SIT) comprising additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) city-3 Paramjit Singh Pannu, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) south Rupinder Kaur, ACP (Atam Park) Ramandeep Singh, Focal Point SHO Surinder Singh and CIA staff-1 inspector Rajan Parminder Singh.

The police commissioner said the teams dispatched to other states to investigate the matter had nabbed one Abid from Delhi. Hailing from Bihar, Abid had settled in Ludhiana but had been living in Delhi for the past one month.

“The police have been investigating the role of Abid who could be a co-accused or a co-witness in the case. According to police information, Abid knows much about the incident,” said the police commissioner.

Till now the police have arrested eight accused -- Anwar, Shehzad, Niyaz, Binder, Amarjit, Babbal, Vikas and Vicky, booked in the kidnapping, attempt to rape and immolation case.

The police commissioner said the families of the accused had been claiming innocence of their kin, but they had not given the clean chit to anyone.

The accused had allegedly immolated the victim by pouring kerosene on her on December 4 for lodging an FIR against them. The girl succumbed to her burns on December 9.
