Ludhiana: Couple dead as cop’s car hits motorcycle in Doraha

As per police, the impact of the hit was such that the motorcycle was flung in the air and the victims were thrown a few metres away.

A couple died after their motorcycle was hit by a head constable’s speeding car near Sirhind Canal in Rampur village near Doraha on Wednesday night. The impact of the hit was such that the motorcycle was flung in the air and the victims were thrown a few metres away, said police.

Ajmer Singh, 36, and Kuldeep Kaur, 35, residents of Ror Majra village in Machhiwara were killed while their three children, two girls and a boy, sustained injuries. Dilpreet Kaur, 7, Bakshish Kaur, 5, and Gurjot Singh, 3, were admitted to Sidhu Hospital in Doraha.

The Duster car belongs to a traffic police in-charge Angrej Singh, who is deployed at Lalru in Mohali. The car was being driven by Angrej Singh’s driver Dinesh Kumar and the cop was sitting in the car when the mishap occurred, police said.

According to the police, Kuldeep Kaur was pregnant and the family was going to Tajpur village in Raikot.

Ajmer, who was a Granthi, was working at a gurdwara in Tajpur village.

Angrej, was going to his native place Sri Muktsar Sahib. After hitting the motorcycle, the driver did not stop the car and tried to escape but since the railway crossing gate was closed, the police and the commuters were able to nab them.

Inspector Manjit Singh, Doraha police station, said the couple died on the spot whereas their three children were admitted to the hospital. “We have seized the car and arrested the driver. A case is registered under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304 A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the driver,” he said.

Manjit said the children will be handed over to Ajmer Singh’s brother.
