The police first tired to persuade the protesters to lift the blockade, but when the interns didn't relent, they were taken into custody. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMER) senior authority members and SDM Amardeep Jain reached the spot to pacify the protesters but to no avail.
The interns are demanding hike in the stipend from existing Rs 7,800 to Rs 12,800. PGIMS, director, Dr Chand Singh Dhull said that the related file with officials' recommendation had been sent to government department concerned. He also criticised the doctors for staging a protest.
