Mid-day meal workers stage protest

Thousands of mid-day meal workers from across the state flooded streets of Moga city on Tuesday afternoon to press to the government for their demands while various trade union of the region also backed their protest.

After a protest rally, the mid-day meal workers staged a dharna outside the deputy commissioner's office.

The protesters were demanding that they should be declared government employees and should be paid Rs 5,768 per month as salary as per notification of union government for minimum wages. They also raised slogans against the state government.

State president of Mid-day Meal Workers Union Karam Chand Chindalia and district president and national working committee member of Indian National Trade Union Congress, Vijay Dhir, were leading the protesters.

"There are over 55,000 mid-day meal workers across the state. They are being paid just Rs 1,200 per month. We demand that the state government declare these mid-day meal workers as its employee and be paid Rs 5,768 per month," said Dhir.

The protesters also handed over a memorandum to Moga deputy commissioner Arashdeep Singh Thind.
