Demanding dismissal of jail minister Swaran Singh Phillaur for his failure to stop drug smuggling of drugs to jail inmates, the Naujawan Bharat Sabha held a demonstration outside the minister's residence at the local Urban Estate-I on Wednesday.
The protesters also demanded that a report on narcotic smuggling in Punjab authored by former DGP Shashi Kant be made public.
Addressing the gathering, sabha president Raminder Singh said that the report had pinpointed the politicians and police officials involved in smuggling of narcotics in the state.
He alleged that the state government had failed to stop smuggling of drugs into jails, as in mates still continued to die of drug overuse in jails.
He added that a report from KotKapura SDM Darshan Singh Garewal over deaths of inmates in Faridkot jail has documented that more than 80% inmates received drugs in their jail cells.
He alleged that cabinet minister Phillaur was solely responsible for present conditions of jails and the minister should be immediately sacked.
