With November’s incident of Canadian NRI crashing his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), a Scorpio, into the Wagah-Attari border gate still fresh in the minds of the officers of the security establishment and another case of three youngsters in an Innova coming within one km of the border on Sunday, the Border Security Force (BSF)’s move to throw a security blanket along the border area could not have come at a better time.

Under a wide-ranging project that encompasses all areas, a plan is in place at all sensitive locations and approach roads -the Integrated Check Post (ICP), the Joint Check post (JCP) and the Kahangarh Post at the Attari Border - to ensure that troops can overpower an assailant in a few seconds.

Besides the age-old security step of increasing the number of troops, certain special steps and techniques have also been put in place to ensure fool-proof security.

Special barricades that do not get dragged away or uprooted by any speeding vehicle have been put in place. These barricades also have sharp nails positioned to deflate the tyres of any vehicle trying to flee. Special equipment with nails, meant only to ensure that a vehicle stops are also being put on roads near the border.

Alarms on barricades

To add to the security blanket around this highly-sensitive area, an alarm system has also been put in place on the barricading itself. Troops from nearby posts can rush in on the sounding of the alarm.

BSF DIG Sumer Singh who gave the visiting media persons a tour of the area on Sunday said, “The Scorpio incident was an eye-opener and led to these new equipment being added. We have enhanced the deployment troops near the Joint Check Post and the approach road. Special barricades with nails, surprise alarm, system and other elements have been added to ensure that no security breach takes place.”

The DIG added that to ensure troops are always alert, special mock drills are held and the effort is to ensure that the force is never taken by surprise.

At the time, the November incident was seen as a major security breach and since then there has been a concerted effort to beef up security around the border.

The Indo-Pak Joint Check Post has been under constant threat ever since a blast on the Pakistani side of the border around a year ago.
