Officials intervene, Dalit labourer Gamma released from chains

Finally, 54-year-old Dalit labourer Gurnam Singh alias Gamma, who was said to be mentally unstable and had been chained at his own house by his wife and children for over six months at Lopo village under Nihal Singh Wala subdivision, 25 km from the district headquarters, was freed after the intervention of the district administration as well as Amarjit Kaur Sahoke, chairperson of Zila Parishad, Moga, on Wednesday.

Finally, 54-year-old Dalit labourer Gurnam Singh alias Gamma, who was said to be mentally unstable and had been chained at his own house by his wife and children for over six months at Lopo village under Nihal Singh Wala subdivision, 25 km from the district headquarters, was freed after the intervention of the district administration as well as Amarjit Kaur Sahoke, chairperson of Zila Parishad, Moga, on Wednesday.

Gamma was brought to Dr Mathura Dass Pahwa civil hospital here for treatment immediately in an ambulance.
The victim’s family had claimed that they had approached local officials for help in getting Gamma treated at any government hospital free of cost but they did not get any help.

The Hindustan Times had highlighted about this shocking matter in these columns on May 23. After that, Moga deputy commissioner Parminder Singh Gill had ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Dr Renu Mangla, chief medical officer, said that a special team, led by psychiatrist Rajesh Mittal, has been formed to take care of the patient and all required medicines will be provided free of cost.

Zila Parishad chairperson Sahoke said, “We will arrange a special diet for the patient and ensure that Gamma becomes normal soon.”

Psychiatrist Rajesh Mittal said, “We will get Gamma treated and the cost would be borne by us. We have conducted a medical examination of Gamma and found that Gamma is not seriously mentally sick.”

Swaran Kaur, wife of Gamma, claimed that her husband used to work as an agricultural labourer and fell mentally ill around 18 months ago due to poor financial condition. She said six months ago, Gamma started abusing family members as well as villagers and everyone advised them to lock him in a room.

The DC said that sub-divisional magistrate of Nihal Singh Wala is inquiring into the matter. “I have sought a detailed report in this regard from the health department as well. Further action will be taken on the basis of the inquiry report.”
