National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) Ludhiana branch organised a seminar on endocrinology at a hotel on Saturday.
City-based endocrinologist Dr Rakesh Goyal was the guest faculty.
NIMA president Dr Rajesh Thapar welcomed the guest faculty and delegates. More than 70 delegates of NIMA Ludhiana participated in the event.
In his address, Dr Goyal discussed hypo and hypergonadism, hirsutism, poly cystic ovarian disease (PCOD), infertility, stunted growth and hypothyroidism.
Hypoglycemia in diabetes and its long-term effect on diabetics was also discussed.
He said recent trials had concluded that people suffering from hypoglycemic episodes, suffered more from stroke, memory disorders and were at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the drugs having, hypoglycemia-free properties were finding more acceptance from the doctor fraternity.
“Weight gain is another side effect of oral anti-diabetic medications and insulin. So weight-decreasing or weight-neutral molecules are proving to be a boon for diabetics,” Dr Goyal added.
Dr Surinder Gupta, general secretary of NIMA, while summing-up the delebrations, adopted the unanimous majority view, that type2 diabetes was a lifestyle-related, but preventable metabolic disorder.
