Despite having no vacant seats in many departments, the university is holding the test for all subjects, raising questions over whether students who clear the test will get admission.

According to information, there are no vacant seats in 13 subjects, including business management, commerce, economics, education and community services, English, Punjabi, Hindi, journalism and mass communication, library and information sciences, political science and statistics.

Even the seats available in other departments are mentioned as 'tentative slots'.Around 2,300 students have applied for the joint entrance test.

The candidature of qualified students will remain valid for two years but the entrance test for Ph D programme will be conducted every year.

As per rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), a professor is entitled to enrol eight students for Ph D, associate professor six students and assistant professor five students.

"What is the purpose of conducting the test for Ph D programme if no seats are available with the faculty of different departments," wondered a senior professor.

"The faculty is not bound to enroll the entrance test qualified students even if they have vacant seats. Those who have cleared the UGC and junior research fellowship and those who have passed M Phil are available as options for the faculty," said a professor.

Manjit Singh, one of the applicants, who earlier cleared the test in 2011, said he would take the test for the second time as he failed to secure the seat in the past two years.

"Besides preparing for the test, it is better for applicants to spend time on insisting the faculty concerned to become their guides for the Ph D," he said.Vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh was not available for comment.

Hostels for research scholars

The problem doesn't end for students as even if one gets admission, one has to look for hostel accommodation. The university has only 200 hostel rooms for research scholars.Though all rooms are cubicles, they are generally given on twin-sharing basis to adjust maximum students of M Phil and Ph D.
