The foundation stone was laid for the schools at Punjab Agriculture University, Haibowal Khurd and Cemetry Road.
PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that construction work of these schools would be completed within nine months. In the first
phase classrooms would be built and then the rest of the area.
He said the idea was to provide facilities in the area of education, health and basic necessities. He said that Hargobind Khurana Scholarship scheme launched by the state government provided opportunity to the economically weaker section.
He said that the government had initiated six residential schools in the state for meritorious students, where education and other living costs would be provided free.
Maheshinder Singh Grewal, advisor to chief minister; Rajindra Bhandari, vice-chairman, Punjab Planning Commission; Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, mayor and Paramjit Kaur Chahal, district education officer; were also present.
However, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal inspected four schools on February 1 and granted Rs 5 crore to elevate these schools as model schools. Out of the budget, Rs 1 crore was released 11 days after the announcement.
