The UT administration has decided to further tighten its noose over the municipal corporation staff by carrying out review of the works conducted across the city in different areas.

The sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) have decided to review the work conducted by the MC staff and officers. The SDMs will focus on an area every week and carry out inspections to see the progress of work in different fields and how it is being managed.

The SDMs will review the sanitation work, parking situation across the city, encroachment removal and other work. Giving details, SDM east Danish Ashraf said, “The SDMs are making a list of reviewing different works being carried out by the municipal corporation. Every week the SDMs will visit different areas and report will be prepared about what all is lacking and how it can be improved.”

The decision is in sync with the adviser’s instructions that the SDMs should review the work of MC staff so that responsibility can be fixed. Ashraf added, “We have asked the MC inspectors to carry out checks in their concerned areas and submit a report, following the SDM’s will visit the areas. A detailed schedule will be prepared in this regard.”

Ashraf further highlighted that he would pick up the different colonies falling under Chandigarh Housing Board and carry out checks to see whether quality work is being undertaken. The sewage, sanitation, roads condition, parking, streetlights functioning and other basic amenities would be checked.

Meanwhile, two days ago, upset over the appointment of three sub-divisional magistrates as ex-officio members of the municipal corporation to monitor the quality of works of civic body, the nominated councillor Surinder Bahga said that there were many ways to check the quality of work.

A third party inspection system by organisation like National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research could also help in checking the quality of work, said Bahga. The nominate councillor had also shot off a letter to UT adviser Vijay Kumar Dev on the issue saying that, appointment of SDM’s had rather complicated the working of MC.

In August, the adviser had ordered that SDMs would be looking after MC’s field activities— sanitation, solid waste, water supply, enforcement and engineering department— in their respective sub-divisions. The additional commissioners-cum-SDMs would also interact with the head of sub-divisions/branch in-charges for their respective areas.
