The entire city was on Friday dipped in the colours of Basant Panchami. The fifth day of spring, which is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and kite flying, was celebrated with all the tradition. The most-awaited festival of the border area began early on Friday, as kites of all colours and sizes dominated the sky.

Even the girls enjoyed the passion of flying kites and multi-coloured balloons. DJ music was playing in every street from systems installed on top of the buildings. People were dancing to the tunes of Punjabi and Hindi songs. "Whoever is posted out of Ferozepur tries to secure advance leave of absence from job to be home on Basant Panchami and enjoy the day," said Dushant Malhotra, 45, management professional in a multinational company at Gurgaon. "Spring has its own charm, and all pomp and show is fair," said Desh Tuli, a veteran of kite flying.

In most homes in the city, sweet yellow rice was prepared as festival dish.
