Doctors who examined the urine sample of a long-fasting Surat Singh Khalsa on Monday have found the test results normal. His sugar level is normal and ketone bodies (three water-soluble molecules that are produced by the liver from fatty acids during periods of low food intake) are negative. "He refuses to give us his urine and blood samples for further examination but has allowed doctors to measure his blood pressure, which also is at normal level," said Ludhiana civil surgeon Dr Renu Chhatwal. The 82-year-old Sikh protester, who has refused medical treatment, remains conscious.

Sources in the police explained the confusion that had led the cops to scale the walls to get into Khalsa's house at Hasanpur village on Monday evening when deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal and doctors were inside talking to him. "The officers missed some calls from the team and, finding the door also bolted from inside, believed that the protesters had taken it captive," said the source. Additional director general of police HS Dhillon has met Khalsa's supporters and senior superintendent of police Ravcharan Singh Brar has visited him in hospital.
