A newly wed woman was chained to bed for four days without food and water, belted and punched in the stomach by her husband and in-laws for not bringing a refrigerator as part of dowry.

The torture began on Friday, the first day of 20-year-old Avrun Nisha’s marriage, and went on till she was rescued by the police on Tuesday evening from her in-laws' house in Chota Madanshahi village in Sahibganj district, around 350 km from Ranchi.

Police said they found Nisha wriggling in pain with hands and legs tied to the four corners of the bed with iron chain. They admitted her in Sahibganj Hospital and arrested her father-in-law.

"Rajibul (huband) is on the run, but we have arrested his father Jabir Ansari and have taken him for questioning. Jabir has accepted the crime," said Sahibganj Superintendent of Police Sunil Bhaskar.

Though dowry is banned, according to the 2013 National Crime Records Bureau, 8,083 women were killed over dowry disputes in a year in India, which works out to roughly 1 death every hour. Jharkhand accounted for 1,428 cases. Many women are burned alive as a form of retribution by in-laws unsatisfied over dowry.

Police said Nisha's medical report proves she was whipped with a belt and punched several times in the stomach which led to acute abdominal pain.

Nisha’s mother Nasibun said she was in for a shock when she rang up her daughter.

Nasibun said: "I called her on Saturday. Nisha's in-laws picked up the call said my daughter had run away”.

Police raided the house after Nasibun complained to local police.

"We had assured the Ansaris that the fridge would reach them in a week's time. The family was given Rs 1 lakh cash, TV and a motorcycle," said Nasibun.
