Priyadarshan to make a film on AIDS
Priyadarshan has got the Kanchivaram team on board that includes Prakash Raj, Nasser, Ashok Selvan and Sriya Reddy for this film.
Priyadarshan’s latest film on AIDS is now in the last phase of post-production, and will soon hit the theatres. The movie, yet to be titled, will be narrated in a light vein, though the subject may be serious and important.
Priyadarshan said he did not want to do a documentary, because it was really not a popular genre, and tended to go over people’s heads. “This is why I have made an effort to infuse wit and humour into the narrative of my film. I personally feel that a feature goes far in educating viewers...And AIDS awareness is still a big issue”.
However, the movie has elements of sheer thrill and a hard-hitting climax. Shot over 17 days, Priyadarshan’s film takes place in a medical laboratory in the course of a single day, more specifically between seven in the morning and five in the evening -- when eight men and women assemble there to have their blood samples checked for AIDS. “Though they get around chatting with one another, not one of them divulges that he or she is testing for AIDS”, Priyadarshan averred.
Interestingly, Priyadarshan has got the Kanchivaram team on board. Prakash Raj, Nasser, Ashok Selvan, M.S. Bhaskar and Sriya Reddy will act out the dramatic developments in that lab that day.
Art director Sabu Cyril and cinematographer Sameer Thahir (of Bangalore Days) will enrich Priyadarshan’s creation.
Kanchivaram is an extraordinarily moving story of Vengadam, an impoverished weaver in the temple town of Kanchivaram during British rule -- whose ambition to buy a silk sari remains but a dream. Not just this, but it also lands him in jail and leads to unimaginable tragedy.
Kanchivaram clinched the National Award for Best Feature Film in 2008, and Priyadarshan continues to make movies in several languages, like Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. Some of his notable Hindi works are Hera Pheri, Hungama, Dhol and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.
