After Jolie, Drew Barrymore in UN ambit
The Hollywood beauty has been roped in for the United Nation's World Food Programme.
Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore has been roped in to be an Ambassador against Hunger for the United Nation's World Food Programme (WFP).
Barrymore has been charged with the task of using her celebrity status to promote school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest countries. "I am honoured and humbled to accept this challenging and rewarding assignment. I can't think of any issue that is more important than working to see that no schoolchild in this world goes hungry,” e!Online quoted Barrymore, as saying.
The 32-year-old actress, who recently topped People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People list, spoke from Washington, D.C., where she was on Capitol Hill to help lobby Congress about passing draft legislation that would enlarge the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and
Child Nutrition Programme, which regulates grants for school meals. "Feeding a child at school is such a simple thing—but it works miracles. School feeding not only fills stomachs, but has a proven track record of boosting enrollment, attendance and academic performance. For just pennies a day per child, this programme changes lives—and ultimately can impact the futures of poor countries around the world in a profound way,” she said.
Barrymore has become the latest Ambassador for the WFP joining Kenyan world marathon record-holder Paul Tergat, himself a former receiver of school feeding programmes, among others.
“We are delighted to have Drew Barrymore join our team. Her passion and commitment to changing the world for the better—and of course the respect and admiration she commands—will make her a wonderful champion for school feeding,” WFP executive director Josette Sheeran said.
