Rishika Sunkara was India’s flag-bearer at the Asian Junior Tennis Championships on Friday.
Continuing her impressive run at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex, the seventh seed knocked out top seed Eri Hozumi of Japan 7-6 (2), 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
The first set was tight but in the tiebreaker Rishika kept her composure and closed out the set, giving away just two points in the process. Once she had the momentum going, the result was a foregone conclusion. The second set was wrapped up without losing a game.
Second seed Ran Tian of China came through to the semifinals with a hard fought win 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 over the eighth seeded Uzbek Sabina Sharipova.
In the boys’ section, sixth seed Vaidik Munshaw was perhaps aided by the luck of the draw as he faced the only unseeded player, compatriot Manshingh Athare. The former was the stronger of the two, winning 6-3, 6-2. He will face second-seeded Bowen Ouyang of China in the semifinals.
