In another case of world-class ski resorts in the most unlikeliest of places, the city of London is hoping to build the UK's largest indoor ski center.
As part of redevelopment plans for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London mayor Boris Johnson hopes to build a ski facility that will rival that of Ski Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, one of the largest facilities in the world spanning 22,500 square meters.
The new London ski resort would be more than double the size of similar centers in the UK and include retail, hotel and restaurant space, the city says.
In addition to indoor ski centers in one of the biggest metropolises in the world, and the deserts of the Middle East, recently North Korea announced grand plans to likewise build what it called a world-class facility on Massik Pass -- a move widely seen to rival South Korea which is hosting the winter Olympics in 2018.
Meanwhile, other redevelopment proposals for Olympic Park includes a new University College London campus, a residential neighborhood of 8,000 homes, miles of commercial retail space, and the tallest sculpture in the UK, the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a 115-meter observation tower.
