“It’s taken Kapil eight months, but only he could have done it,” enthuses Singh, recalling the award ceremony in London where Dev was presented with the Cricketer of the Millennium Award by Sir Vivian Richards.

Singh remembers Sir Viv saying that Dev deserved the prestigious award not for his performance or winning the championship, but because he wore his heart on his sleeve.

The icon went on to recall a moment from a Test match in West Indies where India was at 140 for 7, and chasing 240 odd runs. Then Dev walked in. Sir Viv watched as Dev, despite initial hurdles went on to score an unbeaten 80 and eventually won the match for India.

In 1999, 10 days before the World Cup, Singh had organised a friendly cricket match between the 1983 Indian team and the ongoing World Cup XI team.

“Dev’s first ball to Sachin Tendulkar was a bouncer and Sachin went on to hit 118. The Good Luck India campaign was a superhit and brought former cricketers like Mohinder Amarnath and Kapil Dev himself back in the spotlight,” points out Singh.

Singh points out that in a nation where cricket is religion, there will be many more opportunities to bring together other legends. “Next time, maybe we can get Saurav Ganguly, Brian Lara, Shaun Pollock, Sanath Jayasuriya and legends from other sports like PT Usha and Milkha Singh or even cinema, music and the arts to inspired future champs from the next generation.”
