A dance company from Los Angeles (LA Dance Project) will perform on the opening night of Cannes, whose 68th edition kicks off on May 13.

Those who have been cribbing about the song and dance that India makes out of its cinema and just about every ceremony, including movie festival inaugurals, will have to soon wonder whether the most-renowned-in-the-world Cannes Film Festival is falling into this melodious muddle.

A dance company from Los Angeles will perform on the opening night of Cannes, whose 68th edition kicks off on May 13. Members of the LA Dance Project will pay homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo through stylised motion and movement -- a dance number indeed, set to the notes of music.

The dancers will recreate a scene in which the character essayed by James Stewart is rediscovering the supposedly dead Madeleine, whom actor Kim Novak, calling herself Judy, is impersonating. Bernard Hermann's notes, heavily inspired by Wagner's opera, Tristan and Isolde, will set the score for the stage drama. The show will be choreographed by Millepied, director of the Paris Opera Ballet.

Seventeen dancers will enlighten a celebrity audience, which will include members of the several juries, Hollywood stars and Indian actor Katrina Kaif. Sonam Kapoor will arrive in Cannes a few days later to be part of the Red Carpet brigade.

Millepied will have one more reason to be at Cannes this time. His wife, actor Natalie Portman, will present her feature, A Tale of Love and Darkness (Special Screenings). She wrote, helmed and also acted in it, a work based on the Amos Oz' book.
