New York explosion updates: IS-inspired Bangladeshi suspect Akayed Ullah arrested

An explosion was reported at a bus terminal in New York’s Manhattan, with the police taking one person into custody. Here are the live updates.

The New York Police Department responded to an explosion near Times Square after a 27-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh detonated a homemade pipe bomb strapped to his body in a crowded subway passage on Monday morning. Three people were injured, leaving the city on edge just six weeks after a deadly truck attack.

Here are the updates:

8:21pm: Officials identify suspect as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, who was inspired by the Islamic State ideology. Reports say he is of Bangladeshi origin.

8:20pm: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says suspect believed to have acted alone and that there are no known other incidents.

8:19pm: New York governor says explosion at transit hub was With low-tech device, resulting in a few minor injuries.

8:10pm: Retired New York detective Wally Zeins tells WNYW Fox TV that according to his contacts in the police department, the suspect is from Bangladesh and lived in Brooklyn, reports news agency IANS.

8:09pm: The New York City police commissioner calls the subway pipe-bombing a “terror-related incident”.

8:00pm: The Fire Department of New York says four people, including the suspect, have been hurt following the pipe bomb explosion in a New York City subway at the height of the morning rush hour. Fire officials say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

7:35pm: “Traffic update regarding incident at 42nd St and 8th Ave: No cars allowed to exit FDR Drive from 59st to 42nd St., — 45th to 40th St., 7th to 9th Ave remains closed, tweets the NYPD.

7:20pm: The NYPD confirms a “male suspect is in custody”. The department says no injuries was reported other than that suffered by the suspect.

7:12pm: A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that a man had a pipe bomb strapped to him when it went off on a New York City subway platform.

7:05pm: The office of the New York mayor, Bill de Blasio, said : “The mayor has been briefed on the incident in midtown. The NYPD, FDNY and first responders are on the scene.”

7:02pm: A commuter who travelled through the Port Authority terminal on Monday morning told the Guardian the explosion happened 60 seconds after they exited the building. A police officer told the commuter it was “a guy with a pipe-bomb”.

6:52pm: US president Donald Trump briefed on New York explosion, says White House.

6:50pm: New York Police confirm one person is in custody but not yet confirming what type of device was used. A person was arrested and has non-life-threatening injuries.

6:48pm: Media reported several people were injured, and WPIX television reported, citing sources, that a man with a “possible second device” has been detained in the subway tunnel.

6:42pm: Local news channel WABC cited police sources as saying a possible pipe bomb detonated in a passageway below ground at Port Authority.

6:35pm: A few injuries reported in incident at New York’s Port Authority: WABC News, citing police sources. The New York Fire Department received call around 7.19 a.m.
