Colombian authorities have arrested 12 suspected guerrillas belonging to the country's largest insurgency group during a raid near the northern town of Los Palmitos, Spain's EFE news agency reported on Wednesday.

Those taken into custody were part of a unit of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the police said Tuesday. The police and the military launched a joint operation to catch the rebels.

The suspected rebels were arrested in Sabanas de Pedro, a rural hamlet near Los Palmitos, some 800 km from Bogota in the Caribbean province of Sucre.
The police said the troops seized 13 rifles, two handguns and 13 cartridges from the rebels.
