Organisers had erected 20 marquees on the 77-acre plot of land near the temple, where plays and dancing took place on Friday night.

800 organisations had joined hands to celebrate the festival.

"It is an amazing festival full of colour and warmth," said Ramesh Kallidai. "Those who could not make it last night can participate on Sunday."

Krishna Janmasthami was also celebrated at Shri Ram Mandir, considered Britain's oldest Hindu temple in Indian-dominated Southall in west London.

Amplified Indian devotional music blared through the streets of Southall as hundreds of members of the Hindu community participated in a colourful procession taken out as part of the celebration.

The event was organised by Arun Thakur, President of the Shri Ram Mandir, and Umesh Chander, Chairman of the Hindu temple trust.

In the 'Shobha Yatra' procession, two Sikh organisations, the Guru Singh Sabha and the Meri Peri Gurudwara, also participated reflecting the Hindu-Sikh unity.
