Court demands explanation on detention of Zia's son

The Bangladesh High Court has asked the government to explain in 10 days why the detention of Tarique Rahman was not illegal.

Bangladesh High Court on Tuesday asked the government to explain in 10 days why the detention of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, who has been charged in an extortion case, was not illegal.

The order came after Rahman's wife Jobaida Rahman filed a petition with the Court -- the second in eight days- following his arrest on March eight in the anti-graft crackdown of the caretaker government.

Tarique, who wielded immense clout during his Bangladesh Nationalist Party's five-year rule, appeared in court yesterday to face extortion charges.

Accepti8ng the corruption charge sheet against him the court rejected rejected his bail plea and remanded him to custody until March 29.

A case was filed against Rahman on March 8 for allegedly extorting Taka 1 crore from a construction firm and was arrested the same day from his mother and BNP chief's house

There are 12 witnesses in the case, police said while lawyers said if found guilty, he could be jailed for a maximum of five years.
