Alleged kidney thief Amit Kumar’s palatial home in Canada is up for sale for $634,900, or Rs 2.6 crore.
The 5,600 sq ft home, located in the tony Toronto neighbourhood of Brampton city, has been listed for sale on the website of the local real estate board. The house is co-owned by Kumar’s wife Poonam Kumar, who went underground after the kidney racket was unearthed.
Kumar and Poonam had bought the property for $610,000 (about Rs 2.5 crore). The Royal Bank of Canada financed it with $457,500 while Kumar paid the balance. The monthly installment of $2,700 (Rs 1,10,000) was paid in February, but it is not known if Poonam kept pace with the March payment after Kumar was arrested.
Reliable sources told Hindustan Times that all the money in Kumar’s joint bank account with his wife was withdrawn just around the time he was nabbed in Nepal last month.
The centrally air-conditioned house overlooks a duck pond and boasts of over $100,000 (Rs 40 lakh) in upgrades — including granite kitchen counter tops, bricked interlocked patio, a ravine view with a cabana, bar and a saltwater pool, which by some morbid coincidence, is shaped like a kidney. The property is being advertised as a house with a “dream kitchen.” It carries an annual property tax of over $5,200, or Rs 213,000.
The public viewing of the house in Brampton city begins on March 20 for people to make an offer. Realtors are being offered higher than normal commissions to sell the house.
