Indo-Pak cooperation vital for peace in region: White House

The Obama administration is encouraged by reports of 'intelligence sharing' between India and Pakistan on terrorist activities, the White House has said, describing it as 'important cooperation' which is needed to ensure peace and stability in the region.

"We have seen reports recently of -- without getting into any details -- of intelligence-sharing, which I think denotes important cooperation that we think is needed on both sides (India and Pakistan) in order to ensure peace and stability in the region," White House Press Secretary told reporters last evening.

The Wall Street Journal had reported earlier this week that India and Pakistan have started sharing intelligence information on terrorist activities, in particular those related to the Mumbai attacks, at the initiative of the United States.

In response to a question about reducing tension between India and Pakistan, Gibbs said: "You know, obviously, he (President Barack Obama) has in the past few weeks been very involved in our discussions with Pakistan as it related to the meetings that were held here."
