Koirala, Deuba campaign for Prachanda’s substitute
Nepal’s veteran political leader and Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala claimed that the general public has now started looking for an alternative to Prime Minister Prachanda, reports Anirban Roy.
Nepal’s veteran political leader and Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala on Sunday claimed that the general public has now started looking for an alternative to Prime Minister Prachanda.
The octogenarian leader alleged that the Maoist-led government is pushing Nepal towards totalitarianism by bringing “anti-people ordinances. “So, people are feeling the need to find a new prime Minister,” he said at Biratnagar.
The Maoist-led government recently endorsed three new ordinances on constituting a high-level commission on the disappeared people, making an inclusive public service and amendment to the regulation for voters’ list for the upcoming by-election.
The Nepali Congress, which is the largest opposition party in Nepal, has been complaining that the government did not discuss them while endorsing the three new ordinances.
Koirala, who has been Nepal’s PM for five times, advised the Maoist-led government to stop running the country in a whimsical way. “Nepal now needs the leadership of a visionary leader,” he said.
On Saturday, Koirala had accused Prachanda of leading Nepal towards a “failed nation” for his alleged unwarranted support to the Maoist combatants and opposing the Nepal Army.
The Nepali Congress president said his party would launch a massive campaign against the Maoist-led government and may summon a special session of the legislative-parliament.
Koirala said his party is holding discussions with other parties and would soon decide on summoning the special session of the Legislature-Parliament.
Echoing Koirala’s statement, former Pm and senior Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the days of the Maoist-led government is numbered as it is working against the interest of the people.
Though the Nepali Congress has not made any public statement on new political alignments, sources said Koirala has offered the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) to lead a new coalition in Nepal.
The Nepali Congress has promised to support the CPN (UML). However, it would be difficult for the CPN (UML) to achieve majority without the support of the Madheshi Janadhikar Forum and few other parties.
