The Nepal Government has fixed the minimum wage for journalists as per the recommendations of a remuneration committee and it will be implemented from mid April this year.
Under the newly implemented Working Journalist Act, the Nepalese scribes will get a minimum of Rs 5,200 monthly salary while non-journalistic employees will get a minimum of Rs 4,600.
The wages were fixed as per the recommendations of the Minimum Remuneration Fixing Committee, which had submitted its report last year.
According to Suresh Acharya, chairman of the committee, in the first phase, all the newspapers, television channels and radio stations classified under ‘A-class´ should implement the act in the current fiscal year.
The Act has also made it mandatory to maintain uniformity while issuing Press Accreditation cards and appointment letters to the journalists.
Those media organisations violating the Act will be deprived of all the facilities provided by the government.
