Nepal's caretaker Prime Minister Prachanda today shifted from the official residence to his rented accommodation in the capital, with the election of veteran Communist leader Madhav Kumar Nepal to the top post.

Prachanda on Saturday shifted to his old residence in Naya bazaar here along with his family members.

Maoist leader Prachanda left Baluwatar, the official residence of the Prime Minister, in the afternoon to his rented house in Naya bazaar. He was a resident in the locality before he was elected as the Prime Minister last August, The Himalayan Times newspaper said.

The election of Nepal to the top post clears the way for the formation of a government, bringing to an end the nearly three-week long political crisis in the country.

The 56-year-old CPN-UML leader, who claims to have the support of 351 lawmakers in the 601-member Constituent Assembly, was the only candidate to have filed the nomination for the post of prime minister. The Maoists boycotted the voting process and said they will not join the new government.

The caretaker premier and Maoist deputy leader Baburam Bhattarai were absent during the parliament session today. Nepal will replace Prachanda who had resigned as premier on May 4 after a dispute with President Ram Baran Yadav on the issue of the sacking of the army chief.
