Spain train crash region declares seven days' mourning

Spain's King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe called off their public engagements Thursday after a train crash that killed 77 people, while the region where the disaster occurred declared seven days of mourning.

The king had been scheduled to receive Spanish tenor Placido Domingo while Prince Felipe had been set to visit the installations of telecoms company Telefonica, a spokesman for the royal household said.

The move was in a sign of mourning for the victims of the crash, the spokesman said, while the president of the northwestern region of Galicia where the accident occurred, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, announced seven days of mourning.

Wednesday's crash, the deadliest in Spain in four decades, also left about 140 people injured.
