Lakshmi Devy’s film “When the Music Changes” comes armed with a purpose too, that of making the world a better place for women and in that lies the positive message that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

How often have you come across a movie that forces you to sit up and take notice of the world around you? More often than not, movies are a kind of escape for us from whatever is mundane around us. But then again, every now and then, a movie like “When the Music Changes” comes along and we are just not the same anymore. Whether it is rape, physical assault or emotional grievance, women face a lot in their day-to-day lives, both inside and outside homes. “When the Music Changes” looks at their lives in its own unique way and creates a narrative set to force a discussion on the public platforms. No wonder that the movie is ‘unsettling’ audiences across the film festivals while marking the debut of Indian-American actor-filmmaker Lakshmi Devy as a director.

Lakshmi, who chose films after she had attended medical school, is today completely immersed in the magic of cinema. The film, “When the Music Changes”, is produced by FiDi Talkies, Lakshmi’s own production house based in New York. John Turturro, famous Hollywood actor-director, is the Executive Producer of the movie. Speaking about his experience, John said, “I must say I was very impressed. And disturbed, in a good way! To pull this off is an accomplishment, especially wearing so many different hats as director, writer and actor. It’s a worthy and important subject matter which takes all shapes and forms in so many different cultures. I thought the visual elements were strong and the story telling too.”

Lakshmi says about her debut, “This film does not only speak about the brutal rape and the injustice meted out to girls and women, but it also culls out the power-play behind sexual abuse. As the story demanded it, a few scenes are portrayed very raw. Those scenes are not a depiction of vulgarity or obscenity; rather, they are tailored to portray the intensity of sexual abuse.” As a result, the movie is not meant for viewers with a squeamish disposition. It will hurt to watch the intensity portrayed onscreen, but Lakshmi insists that there is no other way to deal with this serious issue.

The cinematography of the movie has been done by Abinandhan Ramanujam, who has also worked on other successful movies in Malayalam cinema like Amen and Double Barrel. Adith Arun, Naveen George Thomas , Shreya Navile and Vignesh Shivasubramaniam form the rest of the cast of the movie. Achu Rajamani is the music director of the movie .The film was edited by veteran editor Anthony Gonsalves.
