Rahul Gandhi's remarks came in the wake of a major global uproar, mostly Muslim nations, in protest against comments made by BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, who were removed from the party a day ago.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over massive diplomatic fallout the country was dealing with in the aftermath of comments made against Prophet Muhammad by now-axed leaders of the saffron camp.

Several nations, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait and Qatar, have officially registered a protest over the matter. Sharma's comments had led to a violent protest in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur last week, injuring at least 40 people, including 20 police personnel..

The government and the ruling BJP have officially distanced themselves from the comments with the former stating that they reflected the “views of fringe elements”. The external affairs ministry also issued a statement against criticism from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It said, "The government of India categorically rejects OIC Secretariat's unwarranted and narrow-minded comments. India accords the highest respect to all religions.”

A day ago, Gandhi said that hate only bred hatred and it was time to unite India. He also said only love and brotherhood can lead India to the path of progress.

He made the remarks after he attended a meeting of the Congress group to discuss the preparing and planning of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ which was announced in the party’s Udaipur conclave.
